Adults with a disability that began before age 22 may be eligible for Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) benefits, also known as Disabled Adult Child (DAC) benefits. These benefits are considered "child's" benefits because they are paid on a parent's Social Security earnings record, even if the adult child has never worked. To qualify, the adult child must meet the following criteria: 

  • Be unmarried or married to a Social Security beneficiary
  • Be at least 18 years old 
  • Have a disability that began before age 22
  • Meet the SSA's disability criteria for adults
  • Have a parent who is deceased, receiving retirement or disability benefits, or has worked to earn enough to be eligible for Social Security benefits 

The amount of the benefit is based on the parent's primary insurance amount (PIA). If the parent is living, the adult child receives half of the PIA, and if the parent is deceased, the adult child receives three-fourths. If the adult child has both parents who are disabled, retired, or deceased, they receive benefits based on the higher PIA.  DAC benefits continue as long as the adult child remains disabled, but marriage may affect eligibility. The adult child may also be eligible for Medicare after 24 months, and Medicaid may pay for Medicare premiums.
