Adults with a disability that began before age 22 may be eligible for Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) benefits, also known as Disabled Adult Child (DAC) benefits. These benefits are considered "child's" benefits because they are paid on a parent's Social Security earnings record, even if the adult child has never worked. To qualify, the adult child must meet the following criteria:
- Be unmarried or married to a Social Security beneficiary
- Be at least 18 years old
- Have a disability that began before age 22
- Meet the SSA's disability criteria for adults
- Have a parent who is deceased, receiving retirement or disability benefits, or has worked to earn enough to be eligible for Social Security benefits
